ISCTE Master Class: Karl Polanyi’s Great Transformation and Transformations Today

Karl Polanyi’s The Great Transformation is a classic of economic history, sociology, and the social sciences generally. It addresses the rise of modern market society and the challenges of effective response – but also develops an important theoretical framework. This course begins by exploring Polanyi’s study. It turns to how the history it described (and indeed Polanyi’s study itself) informed development of welfare states and social democracy in the mid-20th century. It then turns to the new ‘great transformation’ that has challenged the older welfare state model, brought a renewal of classical liberalism as neoliberalism, and created the highly volatile world in which we live today. To register, please contact Laura.Klackle@asu.edu.
